Why Toronto

Canada’s Home Opener and the Smallest Stadium in the Entire World Cup

BMO Field hosts six matches: Canada’s home opener on June 12 (Match 3 of 104), Germany’s only Toronto fixture, two Croatia/Group L matches, and a Round of 32 on July 2. At ~45,736 seats, it is the smallest venue in the tournament. Every seat sits closer to the pitch than at any other World Cup stadium.

  • Canada’s home opener (Match 3 of 104) June 12, Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina. The second match of the entire tournament, and the first men’s World Cup match ever played at BMO Field. Atmosphere will be unmatched.
  • The smallest stadium in the entire World Cup ~45,736 capacity. Every other venue is bigger, most by 25,000+ seats. Every seat at BMO sits closer to the pitch than at any other host stadium. The atmosphere is concentrated.
  • Only purpose-built soccer venue on the schedule BMO Field is the only soccer-specific stadium hosting matches in the US or Canada. Designed for the sport, not retrofitted from NFL/CFL use. Sightlines and pitch dimensions are tournament-grade out of the box.
  • No US visa required Canadian eTA is dramatically simpler than US ESTA for many international travelers. For groups from Europe, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East, Toronto is often the easiest WC city to enter.
Who Toronto Is For

Built for These Groups

Toronto is a different proposition than the US or Mexico host cities: smaller stadium, soccer-first culture, simpler visa entry, deep European diaspora. It is the right city for the buyers below. If a different host city fits your group better, we’ll say so directly.

Canada Fans
Home Opener Attendees

June 12, Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina. The home nation’s opening match and the first men’s World Cup game ever played at BMO Field. The single most-demanded ticket on the entire Canadian schedule.

European Diaspora
Croatia, Germany, Bosnia Travelers

Toronto has one of the largest Croatian diasporas outside Europe, plus deep Italian, Portuguese, and Bosnian communities. Croatia plays here June 23, Germany June 20. Atmosphere will be authentic.

Stadium First
Atmosphere & Sightlines

BMO Field is the smallest WC venue and the only purpose-built soccer stadium on the schedule. If you’d rather feel the match than be in the largest possible venue, this is the strongest pick in the tournament.

Easier Entry
International Travelers Avoiding US Visas

Canadian eTA is dramatically simpler than US ESTA for many travelers. For groups from regions where US visas are slow or hard to secure, Toronto may be the only practical North American host city.

East Coast Cross-Border
US-Based Fans Adding Toronto

1.5hr flight from NYC, ~1.5hr from Boston, ~1hr from Philadelphia. Toronto pairs cleanly with East Coast US matches (MetLife, Gillette, Lincoln Financial). Easiest cross-border addition for an East Coast itinerary.

Canadian Tour
Toronto + Vancouver Itineraries

Both Canadian host cities in one trip. Direct ~5hr flight between them, completely different geography (Lake Ontario vs Pacific coast). The full Canadian World Cup experience.

Canada’s home opener. The smallest stadium in the World Cup. Every seat close to the pitch.

Inside the Stadium

BMO Field: The Smallest Venue on the Schedule

BMO Field is the only soccer-specific stadium in the 2026 tournament. Purpose-built for the sport when Toronto FC entered MLS in 2007, then expanded with 17,756 temporary seats to reach FIFA’s 45,000-minimum capacity. The renovation cost approximately $158M (city plus MLSE). For the World Cup, FIFA officially renames it “Toronto Stadium” under the no-sponsor naming rule. The smallest venue on the schedule, with sightlines and pitch dimensions designed for football from day one.

Where the value concentrates
  • Cat 1 (lower-bowl sideline). Closest to the action, strongest atmosphere. For Canada’s opener, this is the most-demanded section in the tournament.
  • Cat 2 (lower-bowl behind goal). Strong atmosphere, particularly for diaspora-driven fixtures (Croatia, Germany). Best price-to-experience ratio.
  • Cat 3 (mid-tier). Full-pitch perspective. Because BMO is so small, even Cat 3 sits close to the action. A stronger choice here than at any larger venue.
  • Cat 4 (upper levels / temporary seating). The value tier. The 17,756 temporary seats added for the tournament are upper-deck and end-zone configurations. Serviceable, with the biggest gap from Cat 1.
  • Group of 4 rule. FIFA sells in groups of 4. For parties of 5+, we coordinate adjacent blocks during purchase.
Matchday reality
  • Plan to arrive 90–120 minutes before kickoff. Lakefront approach can bottleneck on big fixtures.
  • FIFA bag policy: max 30×20×10cm, no outside alcohol, no detachable-lens cameras.
  • GO Transit Lakeshore West. One stop from Union Station to Exhibition station. Directly usable for matchday and dramatically faster than driving.
  • TTC 509 Harbourfront streetcar. Runs along the lakefront from Union Station to Exhibition Place. Affordable and reliable.
  • FIFA matchday shuttles likely to operate from Union Station and major downtown hotels. Confirm closer to tournament.
  • Driving and parking near Exhibition Place will be heavily restricted on matchdays. Don’t plan to drive yourself.
Why Inventory Moves Fast

Why BMO Inventory Is the Tightest in the Tournament

Smallest stadium + Canada’s home opener + concentrated diaspora demand creates the tightest inventory profile in the entire tournament. A few specific drivers.

~46K capacity is the smallest in WC
Every other tournament venue is bigger by 5,000–47,000 seats. Same demand for marquee fixtures, half the inventory of most US venues. Math doesn’t work in fans’ favor.
Canada’s home opener moves first
June 12 vs Bosnia is the most-demanded Toronto fixture by orders of magnitude. Premium and lower-bowl inventory locked first; even Cat 4 is a generational ticket if Canada wins.
European diaspora demand concentrates here
Croatia, Germany, Bosnia, plus Italian, Portuguese, and Ghanaian communities. Toronto has one of the largest European diasporas outside Europe. Neutral fixtures here have unusually strong local demand.
Downtown hotel pool gets squeezed
Downtown Toronto, King West, and Yorkville have a meaningful but finite premium hotel inventory. June 11–13 (Canada opener) and June 19–21 (Germany) are tightening fastest.

Where to Stay

Two Strategies

Strategy A · Stay in Toronto
Anchor downtown, walk to the match

The strongest approach for Toronto. The city is walkable, the lakefront is one GO Transit stop from Union Station, and Downtown, King West, and Yorkville offer walking-distance access to dining, nightlife, and matchday transit.

  • Best for international, fly-in, and East Coast US groups
  • BMO Field is one stop from Union Station via GO Lakeshore West
  • Hotel pool is meaningful, though June 11–13 (Canada opener) and June 19–21 (Germany) tighten fastest
  • 3–6 nights is the sweet spot for a Toronto-anchored trip
If You’re Staying in Toronto

Transportation

Getting To And From BMO Field

Toronto is the most transit-friendly host city for matchday in the tournament. BMO Field sits one GO Transit stop from Union Station. The 509 Harbourfront streetcar runs along the lakefront. FIFA shuttles will operate from downtown hotels. Private transport still adds comfort for groups, but Toronto is the rare host city where it isn’t required.

Airports
  • YYZ (Toronto Pearson International). Primary airport, with deep international service from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Approximately 25–60 minutes from Downtown depending on traffic.
  • YTZ (Billy Bishop / Toronto Island). Downtown airport, 5–15 minutes to most hotels. Limited routing (predominantly Porter), but highly convenient when it fits.
  • UP Express train runs YYZ ↔ Union Station every 15 min, ~25 min total. Practical for many travelers.
Getting to the stadium
  • GO Transit Lakeshore West to Exhibition station. One stop from Union Station, 5-minute walk to gates. The strongest matchday transit option in the tournament.
  • TTC 509 Harbourfront streetcar. Runs the lakefront from Union Station to Exhibition Place. Affordable, reliable, busy on matchdays.
  • FIFA matchday shuttles. Likely to operate from Union Station and major downtown hotels.
  • Private SUV or Sprinter. Strongest option for groups prioritizing timing control or post-match efficiency.
  • Uber / rideshare. Works for arrival; bottlenecks post-match. Slower than transit for departure.
  • Driving. Not recommended. Heavy parking restrictions near Exhibition Place on matchdays.

FAQs

Common Questions

Do I need a US visa to attend Toronto matches?

No. Toronto is in Canada, so US visas and ESTAs do not apply. Most travelers need a Canadian eTA (electronic Travel Authorization), which is fast and inexpensive, or a Canadian visa depending on nationality. For groups from regions where US visas are difficult, Toronto is often the most accessible North American host city. We can advise on entry requirements during package planning.

Should I combine Toronto with US matches?

Often yes. Toronto pairs cleanly with East Coast US cities: NYC (1.5hr flight, MetLife hosts the Final), Philadelphia (1hr), Boston (1.5hr). For European travelers, Toronto + NYC is one of the most efficient North American itineraries. We coordinate cross-border flights, hotels, ground transport, and tickets across all cities as a single trip.

Will our group’s seats be together?

Yes. Consecutive seating is standard. In the rare case a section is fully sold, we place pairs in adjacent rows. Exact seating is confirmed before commitment.

Can I buy tickets only, without a full package?

Yes. Tickets-only works for Toronto, especially for travelers based in Toronto/GTA or who already have hotels and transport handled. Tell us what you need and we’ll scope it that way.

When do tickets get delivered?

Tickets are delivered digitally 1–2 weeks before kickoff via email or mobile transfer. Delivery is confirmed in writing once your package is locked.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible. BMO Field is the smallest stadium in the tournament, so every fixture has tighter inventory than equivalent demand at larger venues. Canada’s home opener (June 12), the R32 (July 2), and Croatia’s match (June 23) are tightening fastest. Premium seating and groups of 4+ for those dates are already scarce.

Can you combine Toronto with other host cities?

Yes. Toronto is among our strongest multi-city anchors. Common pairings: Toronto + NYC (1.5hr flight, MetLife hosts the Final), Toronto + Philadelphia or Boston (US East Coast cluster), Toronto + Vancouver (full Canadian tour, Canada plays in both), or Toronto + Mexico City (multi-country itinerary). We coordinate flights, hotels, transport, and tickets as a single trip.
