A TOUR OF PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS

AMERICA’S NO. 1 PUBLIC COURSE

Pebble Beach Golf Links is a course unlike any other, with a view unlike any other. The grounds contain three Top 50 public courses that wrap around the beautiful coastline of Monterey Peninsula in California. The sights of beautiful sand and the Pacific Ocean crashing against Monterey’s famous, breathtaking cliffs are reason enough to visit the course. However, incredible views aren’t the only thing Pebble Beach Golf Links has to offer; it also warrants some really challenging and exciting golf.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOLF:

  • Spyglass Hill

Coming in at number 6 on Golf Advisor’s Top 10 Toughest Courses in America, Pebble Beach’s Spyglass Hill provides a plethora of bunkers, ponds and uphill challenges to truly test a golfer’s game. The course is famous for Bing Crosby’s bet against Jack Nicklaus at the course’s opening in 1966, when Crosby told Nicklaus he wouldn’t be able to break par at Spyglass. Nicklause ended up shooting a 2-under 70 in his first round; however, this legendary moment paved the way for a demanding, yet fair challenge for pros and amateurs alike ever since.

  • Del Monte

A favorite among golfers and the oldest course at Pebble Beach, Del Monte (est. 1897) played an integral role in popularizing golf out West. The course provides a challenge for pros with its small, sloping grounds. Expanded from 9 to 18 holes in 1902, Del Monte began immediately attracting the best golfers around. Today, it annually stages the professional Monterey Open and the amateur Monterey City Championship.

FOR THE PLAY:

  • Peter Hay Golf Course

Located across the street from Pebble Beach Golf Links, Peter Hay Golf Course is the perfect introduction to Pebble Beach Golf for beginners. Full of fun shots and beautiful views overlooking Stillwater Cove, it’s the only nine-hole par-3 layout that’s open to the public on the peninsula. The green fee for the course includes unlimited golf all day.

FOR THE VIEWS:

The Links at Spanish Bay

Gorgeous views of Monterey’s cliffs and glistening beaches can be found from pretty much anywhere on Pebble Beach’s beautiful Golf Links. However, The Links at Spanish Bay arguably possesses the most scenic views on the peninsula, offering panoramic ocean views of 17-Mile Drive, from whitecaps on the Pacific to an unparalleled sunset. The gorgeous sand dues do, however, require precision and focus to properly navigate the dunes, pot bunkers, difficult greens and the ocean breeze. Combining challenging golf and unbeatable seaside sights, The Links at Spanish Bay provide an experience unlike any other on Pebble Beach.

COURSE HISTORY:

Before it became what we know as one of the best golf courses in America, Pebble Beach Golf Links was part of a resort hotel in Monterey called Hotel del Monte. The course was designed by Jack Neville and Douglass Grant and it opened on February 22, 1919, when it would become a part of the famous 17-Mile Drive scenic route. Neville wanted to place as many of the holes as possible along the Monterey coastline.

Since then, the links have played host to various professional and amateur tournaments, beginning with the Monterey Peninsula Open in 1926, which had a $5000 purse. Pebble Beach has also famously hosted the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament, the Champions Tour First Tee Open, and among many others, the U.S. Open, which it will host for the 6th time in 2019.
