  1. Taekwondo made its official Games debut at the 2000 Sydney Summer Games. Since then, it has been a regular and popular feature in the Games program.

  2. Taekwondo was one of the first martial arts to introduce an electronic scoring system in the Games. This system uses sensors on the body protectors and headgear to detect valid strikes, enhancing the accuracy of scoring.

  3. Taekwondo competitions in the Summer Games are divided into eight weight categories, four for men and four for women. Athletes compete in categories ranging from featherweight to heavyweight.

  4. Taekwondo is renowned for its emphasis on high, fast kicks. Head kicks carry more points than body kicks, adding a strategic element to the competition. Additionally, spinning kicks, including spinning hook kicks and spinning back kicks, are valued for their difficulty and point-scoring potential.

  5. Anastasia Zolotic made history at the Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021) Summer Games by becoming the first American woman to win a gold medal in Taekwondo. She achieved this in the featherweight category, showcasing the sport's evolving diversity and talent.
