Sport Climbing – Summer Games 2024

map

These spectacular and nail-biting events were first added to the Games program at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. There will now be two events on the program (rather than just one), combining three disciplines. The best climbers in the world will compete in two separate competitions: a speed climb and a combination of bouldering and lead at Le Bourget Sport Climbing Venue in Seine-Saint-Denis. In 2024, speed becomes an event in its own right with an explosive one-against- one race where the fastest to climb a 15m-high wall win.

Historic Debut:

Sport climbing made its first appearance as a Summer Games sport at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. The inclusion of sport climbing added a dynamic and visually impressive dimension to the Summer Games program.

Three Disciplines:

The sport climbing competition at the Tokyo Games consisted of three disciplines: Speed Climbing, Bouldering, and Lead Climbing. Athletes competed in all three disciplines to determine their combined score.

Gold Medalist - Men's Combined:

In the Men's Combined event, Alberto Ginés López of Spain won the gold medal. The Combined event involves a cumulative score across all three disciplines, showcasing the athletes' versatility.

Gold Medalist - Women's Combined:

The gold medal in the Women's Combined event was secured by Janja Garnbret of Slovenia. Like the men's event, the women's Combined competition required excellence across Speed, Bouldering, and Lead Climbing.

Did you know that..

  1. Sport climbing may seem like a modern sport, but its roots can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The sport evolved from traditional rock climbing and alpinism. However, it gained a distinct identity in the late 20th century with the development of indoor climbing gyms and the introduction of standardized routes and grading systems. The deep cultural connection to traditional climbing adds a layer of history and heritage to the sport.

  2. Speed Climbing involves a standardized route on a specific wall, and athletes aim to ascend it as quickly as possible. The Speed Climbing wall has standardized holds and features, making it consistent across competitions. Bouldering and Lead Climbing are characterized by a combination of dynamic movements and static holds.
