Canoeing – Summer Games 2024

Canoe Slalom – Summer Games 2024

Canoe Slalom competitions will be held in the brand-new whitewater stadium. The slalom competition is a timed run down a course with up to 25 gates to negotiate. Touching a gate adds a two-second time penalty to the run
and missing a gate incurs a 50-second penalty. In Paris, a new slalom competition format will make its debut with Kayak Cross events (men and women). Like Ski Cross or Snowboard Cross, four athletes will set off together from a starting ramp and will have to navigate a course featuring ten gates or obstacles and requiring a kayak- roll. The first two athletes crossed.

Records

Most Gold Medals (Men):

Tony Estanguet of France and Michal Martikán of Slovakia share the record for the most gold medals in the men's canoe slalom. Both athletes have won three gold medals each, showcasing their dominance in the sport.

Most Gold Medals (Women):

Slalom canoeist Elena Kaliská of Slovakia holds the record for the most gold medals in the women's category, having won gold in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games.

Youngest Gold Medalist:

Marta Kharitonova of the Soviet Union is the youngest gold medalist in canoe slalom at the Games. She won the women's C1 event at the age of 18 during the 1980 Moscow Games.

Oldest Gold Medalist:

At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, the oldest gold medalist in canoe slalom was Denis Gargaud Chanut of France, who won the men's C1 event at the age of 29.

Most Decorated Athlete (Total Medals):

Michal Martikán of Slovakia is one of the most decorated athletes in canoe slalom, having won multiple medals throughout his Games career. As of my last update, he had a total of five Games medals.

Dominance of Specific Countries:

France and Slovakia have been historically strong in canoe slalom, consistently producing top-performing athletes and winning numerous medals.

Did you know that..

Inception at Munich 1972: Canoe slalom made its Games debut at the 1972 Munich Games. It was introduced to the Games to add variety to the canoeing events and provide an exciting and challenging competition.

Unique Course Design: Canoe slalom events take place on a whitewater course featuring a series of gates through which paddlers must navigate. The gates consist of both upstream and downstream sections, and athletes must maneuver their canoes or kayaks through them while dealing with the natural flow and obstacles of the river.

Gender Equality: Canoe slalom is one of the Games sports that achieved gender equality early on. Both men and women have competed in canoe slalom events since its inception at the Munich Games, showcasing inclusivity in the sport.

C1 and K1 Events: Canoe slalom features two primary events: C1 (single-person canoe) and K1 (single-person kayak). Athletes navigate the challenging whitewater course using a single-bladed paddle in the C1 event and a double-bladed paddle in the K1 event.

Games Dominance: Athletes from European countries, particularly France, Slovakia, and Germany, have historically dominated canoe slalom events at the Summer Games. These nations have consistently produced top-performing paddlers and secured numerous medals in both the men's and women's categories.
