Athletics – Summer Games 2024
Athletics is the single sport with the most disciplines and participants in the Games due to the sheer number and diversity of its 48 events. From sprints to middle distance races, from jumping and throwing events to a combination of them all, the athletics events light up the stands in the stadium. Historically, in 2024, there will be an identical number of men’s and women’s events.

Athletics, or track and field, is often considered the oldest recorded sport in the world. Events like running and jumping have roots dating back to ancient civilizations.
The world record for the highest high jump is held by Cuban athlete Javier Sotomayor. He cleared a height of 2.45 meters (8 feet 0.46 inches) in 1993, and this record still stands.
The marathon race has a historical origin dating back to the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. According to legend, a Greek messenger named Pheidippides ran approximately 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of the Greek victory over the Persians.
The decathlon, consisting of ten events, is a true test of all-around athletic ability. American athlete Jim Thorpe won the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Games, despite not having specialized training in all the events.
The 100 meters is the only standard running race in athletics that is run entirely in lanes and has no curves. All other sprint races involve curves, but the 100 meters is a straight sprint.
