Facts
History: Artistic swimming has its roots in water ballet, which gained popularity in the early 20th century. The sport officially became known as synchronized swimming in the 1950s before being rebranded as artistic swimming in 2017 by the international governing body, FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation).
Competition Categories: Artistic swimming features both solo and team competitions. In solo routines, a single swimmer performs a choreographed routine, while in team events, groups of athletes perform synchronized routines.
Technical and Free Routines: Competitions in artistic swimming typically involve two types of routines: technical and free. Technical routines require specific elements to be performed in a predetermined order, emphasizing precision and technical skill. Free routines allow for more creativity and flexibility in choreography.
Scoring: Judges evaluate artistic swimming performances based on factors such as execution, artistic impression, difficulty, and synchronization. Athletes are scored on both technical and artistic aspects of their routines.
Underwater Speaker System: To help synchronize routines, many competitions use an underwater speaker system that allows swimmers to hear the music while submerged. This ensures precise timing and coordination during performances.
